Empiezo mi artículo con dos grandes 'OO', las 'OO' de Google la compañía que está dibujando la nueva manera de entender y usar el mundo, y lo empiezo también con una advertencia: Esto está cambiando de nuevo.

La noticia que ayer lanzaban todos los medios de comunicación es solo la punta del iceberg: Google lanza CHROME, un navegador gratuito y en código abierto y por si eso fuera poco basado en la filosofía Google.

La noticia tiene tal dimensión que no la voy a comentar, la dejo ahí para que cada uno saque sus conclusiones de la Guerra de los Grandes y sus consecuencias

Sobre lo que si quiero hablar, y mucho, es sobre otra guerra; la que sin declarar, está librando Google y sus colegas de partida contra una parte de la Comunidad de Consultores y Desarrolladores de aplicaciones web.

Aunque para ser estricto con los hechos y ser fiel cronista de lo que veo, no debería hablar de guerra, porque a Google ni se le ha pasado por la cabeza la idea de competir con nosotros, más bien quieren 'ayudar' al mundo.
Pero en su política de hechos, la amenaza está clara. Hablan ya de un sistema operativo en el que 'correrán' aplicaciones online, que sin ningún género de dudas acabarán con mil y una plataformas, mil y ciento programas, y dos mil y muchos aplicativos que cada día desarrollan nuestros esforzados hombres web, aunque como contrapartida también es cierto que generarán trabajo y oportunidades para otros.

No estoy criticando a Google y a los demás grandes, ni mucho menos. Estoy advirtiendo a la Comunidad Web que esto está cambiando de nuevo y que ahora, aún estamos a tiempo de reenfocar nuestro negocio y redirigir nuestros esfuerzos en nuevas direcciones.

Releyendo un artículo que ayer publicaba La Vanguardia no quedan muchas dudas al respecto: Unas declaraciones del analista Henry Blodget (Silicon Valley Insider) recogidas por la agencia AFP centran el tema: 'Si piensan en Chrome simplemente como otro navegador de internet, se están perdiendo la visión más amplia. En un par de años, no estarán descargando el navegador de Google. Estarán descargando el software de Google, o más bien, estarán usando una serie de iconos Google que vengan preinstalados. Específicamente, estarán trabajando con un software de Google que funcione de forma similar a Windows”. (La Vanguardia)

No cerremos los ojos ante la evidencia. Ya nos pilló el toro de la deslocalización y el de la Globalización, que no nos pille ahora el Toro Grande.

Eso es lo que hoy se veía desde mi azotea. Ahora ya está oscuro y no se ve nada de nada.

Increasingly, technology is present in all spheres of everyday activity. One of these defines us as living beings and as humans: the ability and activity of learning. What happens when technology and learning are combined? Marc Alier talks about web-based learning environments, internet communities, open source software and e-learning.

Every single day of our lives starts with new challenges and opportunities for our human intellect. This ability is essential for humans and may give us the drive to keep going. We start learning as soon as we are born i we don’t stop until the day we leave. Learning is undoubtedly, a vital function.

It is not something new, as such. However the ways that we learn, the forms of learning can become very revolutionary indeed. Humankind evolves and changes. Consequently the way people com together and reach out for other people also changes. Learning is a part of our common activities for communicating with each other, related to each other and to transmit knowledge. If the way we communicate changes, is it necessary to change de way we transmit and integrate knowledge?

Marc Alier is a professor at the LSI Department at UPC. Presently he works as a professors teaching course on project management and social aspects of computing. As classes finish this term he got some time to spare with us and talk with him and think about this enigmatic process of learning.

Who is Marc Alier?

Technology and Pedagogy are the founding pillars of your present research but, let us trace back your origins, what was your education?

I studied Computer Science at the Barcelona Computing School (FIB) here at the UPC. I got my degree in 1996 and started to work in the IT industry right away. I worked in e-learning and in software for Information Systems.

I am currently at the last stages of my doctorate studies. My PhD thesis is related with tools for the creation and diffusion of e-learning contents and sustainable development.

Then, is this a technological and sociological PhD?

Yes it is. My PhD Advisor was Miquel Barcelówho has been at the frontline in relating Sustainability, Technology and Humanism by creating master and PhD courses on these topics.

There is a growing group of people that is interested in these subjects and in their relationships. There are other professors who are also doing research in the intersection of the aforementioned knowledge areas; for example, Maria José Casany and Pablo Casado or our graduate student Jordi Piguilleu. We are all member of the GESSI research group.

Could you explain us some projects related to your PhD research?

I have been working intensely for some years now on an Open Source project that implements a web-based educational system: Moodle. When I started, Moodle had a virtual community of something like twenty thousand users. During the last years the community of educators and developers has grown immensely. It is now composed of more than 350 000 people. There are more than 45 000 Moodle active deployments all over the world and the number of its users is well over 20 million.

Previously to my involvement with Moodle, I worked as a professor for the online courses of the UOC (Open University of Catalonia, an online only university in Catalonia funded by the Autonomous Government) and ICT. This experience helped me a lot and inspired me for the development of the internal mail system of Moodle that I developed and that is currently used by the UPC. In these cases you work in a highly contextualized fashion: you can see a photograph of the student you are sending an e-mail to, you know very well the subject about which they are sending you a question, etc.

One of the main themes of my Ph D thesis is finding common points of mutual benefit between the software used for the Wikipedia and for Moodle. This research I do with the help of two students of the Master in Computing that our department started recently: David Castro and Ferran Recio. After three years devoted to this initiative we have seen how the UPC officially acquired this educational platform. It is a nice compensation for our work.

How do you attain this kind of impact or popularity?

My research has a high element of feedback from the users. In this sense, I am very happy since, when I started to get involved in the development of Moodle, the software was in a very initial state and this created a strong interest from the part of the users.
My work implies being present and active in the world of the web. I work with blogs, wikis, forums, etc. One has to know and see the actual tools the people are using everyday and one has to get involved with them. I live with and eye on the screen! This is sometimes called “Virtual Ethnography” and participant observation.

What can computing do for education?

Do you think that computing is related with education?

Technology is part of the educational environment; it is a tool for social connection. Consequently is essential to reach out to the learners.

You have to think that presently in all degrees in Education and Pedagogy; would-be teachers are being trained in Computing and also in environments like Moodle. This has been a significant change. Society is slowly starting to realise that technological skills and competence have a place in the overall schema of Education. Since 2005 the educational online platform at UPC is Moodle (http://atenea.upc.edu). The Institute for professor training here, at the UPC, the ICE (Institut de Ciències de l'Educació) offers training in Moodle for all graduate and postgraduate degrees at UPC.

So we can now say that ICT is used as routine in Education?

Well, obviously, every change requires a process of adaptation. Every change in the education system has to undergo structural, planning and logistics changes: For example, when UPC started to introduce collaborative learning activities, it become necessary to get rid of fixed seats in classrooms: one needed classrooms that could be easily reorganized to form groups on the fly. It was also necessary to train teachers in the news ways of learning and to communicate extensively the task that was going on. This is a similar process to the one that we are now undergoing with use of ICT in teaching.

What about Open Source Software?

Working under the (free software) paradigm has been a very important element in my research. Thanks to that we have been able to get access to code created by excellent developers. At the same time we have made our work available to the Moodle community. In this we have been able to put to practical use our developments, getting a very important feedback for our research. Besides that, other developers have been able to access our code. They have spotted and solved bugs and they have sent us the improvements they made. Some times, very few days after we published a module we have received translations of our software, for example, into Swedish or Indonesian.

What is e-learning for you?

E-learning is a training tool that combines insights from technology and from Pedagogy. It applies communication and computation technologies to learning.

In order to work seriously in this framework one has to know new technologies as well as educational paradigms.

You talked about communities of users but you also meet with user groups and developers of this type of software, don’t you?

Sure. There are annual conferences and, to tell the truth, they are quite a success!.

This year in Barcelona, on October 223rd to 25th there will be a meeting of all these people. All Spanish universities cooperate in organizing MoodleMoot Bcn08. Typical attendance is between four and six hundred people. In these events people work in a very dynamic way and with a strong sense of community.

How do you envision the future of your research?

Presently our development of Wiki is already implemented within the Moodle platform.

Now we are thinking about combining Moodle with games for the Wii Console. Also, we are working in the integration of Moodle with mobile devices.

On the other hand, we are also in contact with a work group at MIT under the umbrella of the Open Knowledge Iniciative project.

We are people that believe in the Society of Education, so we’ll keep communicating about our work and communicating with other people!

Ignasi Belda is a 28-year old entrepreneur and a researcher. His nonconformist attitude brought him to work in different national and international universities and to get his own business company, Intelligent Pharma, running. Intelligent Pharma applies artificial intelligence to biomedicine and pharmacy.  One year after being born Intelligent Pharma got various prizes:  Diputció de Barcelona awarded them with the “Best Business Initiative 2008 in Social Responsibility” prize on the 3rd of July and Genoma España  and “La Caixa” awarded them inside the 'Bioemprendedor XXI' context, a couple of days later. This is the recognition for his hard work and enthusiasm.

A morning with Ignasi Belda

We are visiting el Parc Científic today and in the middle of the chaos an bustle of a neighbouring building site we met Ignasi Belda, who is reading his PhD thesis this month and opening his new Intelligent Pharma's office at Parc Científic in a few days.

Tell us how you got here...

I am from Alacant and in my experience it was very positive to come to the big city. I arrived here in 1997 to study a technical degree on Computing at  La Salle School at Ramon Llull University.

When I was in my third year I decided to start a research project with professor Ernest Giralt, who is now one of my PhD advisors. I worked in the application of  artificial intelligence  to the optimization of peptides.

I loved computing so I decided to go on with my studies and I go into  Computing Engineering. During the following years I combined studying with the research that I had started with Ernest. In fact, he was the person who encouraged me to go on even further and start the PhD Thesis that I am reading next week. 
 
We could say that your Thesis has many parents. How is it possible?

Yes, I have worked with many institutions and I have two co-directors and a tutor. Although my situation is not the most common one, it has happened in a very natural way.

I started my research under Ernest Giralt's supervision,  an organic chemistry professor from Barcelona University, so this was the beginning of my PhD. Then Parc Científic was inaugurated a little later and Ernest decided to move there, bringing me with him. In order to proceed with  my research in the field I was interested, artificial intelligent, I entered PhD masters organised by  the LSI department at UPC University where professor Àngela Nebot of the SOCO group became tutor of my Thesis. On the other hand, I also got support on the artificial intelligence world by Xavier Llorà. Xavier is a professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaing and he is being the co-director of my Thesis. The Institut de Recerca Biomèdica (IRB) was born a couple of years ago and Ernest Giralt was appointed as one of the leaders of this new project. That was how I became related to IRB, too. On top of all that my stay at AstraZeneca, a worldwide leading Swedish Pharmacy company, gave the last finishing touch to my research and become the sixth institution to thank for the possibility of my project.
 
Well, if I am not missing anybody that would be it. These are the six PhD God fathers of my Thesis.

We know how you move around during your PhD, but what is the science we find in it?

As I was saying before, I am an specialist in artificial intelligence applied to biomedicine. The title of my Thesis is: Evolutionary Algorithms and de Novo Peptide Design.

We could say that it is structured in two parts. The majority of my research is related to evolutionary computing applied to peptide design. In this first part, I have generated evolutionary algorithms to optimize the bounding energy between some peptides and certain proteins. The biologist and the biochemist that were working in my research team needed to generate and know the kind of peptides that join nicely with these proteins. I give them the computing results through computing simulations and that helped them with the real situation.
 
I began with the Darwinian Theory of Natural Selection and I started my job by generating a random series of peptides, or aminoacids. Then I simulated how these peptides joined the chosen surfaces. Then by using the procedure known as docking and considering the energy that peptides lose with their bonding, I was able to evaluate how these peptides adapted. I chose the best peptides from the first process and then generated a new second generation from them. The second generation was evaluated again and from the best ones I generated a third one and so on. In fact, the methodology that I use is an iterative one. On top of that, the process also introduced some random mutations. Therefore, it follows the real life evolutionary model. This way of working is based on the use of genetic algorithms that belong to evolutionary computing.

On the hand, my stay in Sweden meant incorporation of artificial learning into my research project. AstraZeneca is a company with four thousand researchers and where fourteen million dollars are invested every day in research. As a pharmaceutical company, it is interested in the toxicity of certain molecules. My contribution was to develop a program that was able to distinguish between a toxic and a non-toxic molecule and to give a reason of its toxicity. It is very important both for research and production to know what toxic molecules have in common in order to avoid it when they are designing new ones. To obtain an explanation I use evolutionary algorithms with rules and parameters: electrical charge, hydrophilic ...etc. I work with more than one thousand five hundred physical and chemical parameters and I get the answer what a molecule should be like in order to be toxic. All this knowledge and the evolutionary algorithms developed amount to the last 10% of my thesis.

What is Intelligent Pharma?

The idea of starting a company started only in the last years of my life; in fact, we could say that Intelligent Pharma was born the day after I handed in my PhD thesis, a sunny St. George day, in 2007. Nevertheless I personally believe that being an entrepreneur is something that starts when you are born; my parents were both business people and I knew I wanted to get there as soon as I started my degree.

People think that Intelligent Pharma is closely related to the job I have been doing for the last years. However it is just based on the knowledge and experience that I got during this years. During this time, I have realised, and I do not think people are aware enough of it, that there is a big demand n the health business for people with a strong background in computing. Starting a company is a slow process; I don't want to lie to anybody about it: It needs an entrepreneurial stance, and it is hard to get enough financial background. In spite of all this I’d love to encourage people who are thinking about it because you can get many loans and grants. Parc Cientific, for example, has a program called bioincubators and allows newly born companies to use its material and installations. There are banks like BanCaixa that organise contests for young entrepreneurs. Intelligent Pharma won the last edition of that contest. UPC also gives support through its initiative Innova... There is a big list of institutions willing to help science, economy and people to succeed

With effort and hope everything becomes possible!

Barcelona acoge desde este viernes la mayor cita científica que se celebra en Europa. Más de 4.000 científicos de todas las disciplinas, empresarios, políticos y medios de comunicación podrán debatir y conocer de primera manos los temas candentes en los que trabajan los cerebros más privilegiados del continente.

Se trata de la tercera edición del congreso bianual organizado por EuroScience, una organización de profesionales cuyo objetivo es promocionar la ciencia en Europa, y por la Fundación Catalana para la Investigación y la Innovación. Las dos anteriores tuvieron lugar en Estocolmo (2004) y Múnich (2006).

Desde hoy viernes y hasta el próximo martes, la clonación, las células madre, la conquista espacial, el conocimiento de la mente humana, el reto energético del planeta o el cambio climático estarán presentes en el Palacio de Congresos del Recinto Ferial Montjuïc 1 de la mano de varios premios Nobel y expertos de los centros de investigación más punteros de todo el mundo.

En total, el extenso programa lo componen 122 conferencias y debates con 430 ponentes, que se completarán con cerca de 70 actividades (exposiciones, talleres, teatro, etcétera) dirigidas al público general, todas ellas gratuitas.

Más de 200 personas casi colapsaron ayer noche la terraza del hotel Catedral donde la Cámara de Comercio de Barcelona, Barcelona Activa y Emprenedors XXI celebraban el último encuentro de la temporada del BCN Tech Working.
